Measles Advice

Urgent advice: Measles Outbreak in Enfield and Surrounding Areas

There is currently a growing measles outbreak in Enfield and nearby boroughs, including Haringey.

There have now been over 60 probable or confirmed cases linked to several local schools. The outbreak is no longer limited to one school and is showing signs of wider community spread.

Around 1 in 5 children who have caught measles during this outbreak have needed hospital treatment. Most cases have been in unvaccinated children under 10 years old.

What You Need to Know

Vaccination is the Best Protection

The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) is the most effective way to protect your child and prevent further spread.

  • Children need 2 doses for full protection.

  • If your child has missed one or both doses, please contact us urgently to arrange vaccination.

  • Vaccination is safe and highly effective.

You can also find details of local catch-up clinics here:
https://www.schoolvaccination.uk/catch-up-clinics

If you are unsure whether your child is fully vaccinated, please contact the practice and we will check for you.

If Your Child Has Symptoms

Measles symptoms can include:

  • High fever

  • Cold-like symptoms (runny nose, cough)

  • Sore, red eyes

  • A blotchy red/brown rash (usually starting on the face and spreading)

If you or your child develop fever and a rash:

  • Please call the practice before attending in person.

  • Do not come to the surgery without speaking to us first.

  • This helps us reduce the risk of spreading infection to other patients.

Measles is infectious from 4 days before the rash appears until 4 days after the rash starts.

Babies Under 12 Months

The MMR vaccine is routinely given at 12 months of age.

At present, early vaccination before 12 months is not routinely recommended, unless advised by public health teams following a specific exposure.

If your baby has been in close contact with someone with measles, please contact us urgently for advice.

People at Higher Risk

Measles can be more serious in:

  • Babies under 1 year

  • Pregnant women

  • People with weakened immune systems

If you fall into one of these groups and believe you have been exposed to measles, please contact us immediately.

Help Protect Our Community

Vaccination not only protects your child — it also protects vulnerable people in our community.

If your child is not fully vaccinated, please arrange an appointment as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about the MMR vaccine, our team is happy to discuss them with you.

Also try to avoid close contact with babies and anyone who is pregnant or has a weakened immune system.
